Likes and Dislikes

One of my favorite things about this class was the availability of the professor. Whenever I had a question, it was answered promptly through e-mail, or even better, I loved the instant message office hours. I wish all professors held office hours like that, even if only once a week. One of the things I liked the least in this class was having to wait 12 hours in between each of my posts. There were times were I just wanted to finish all my homework, and while I could write them all at once, I still had to remember to log online and post them at three separate times, which at times was inconvenient. I also didn’t like having to comment on three separate peoples’ posts. Sometimes people wouldn’t post until the last part of the week, which was inconvenient if I wanted to get things done early on. Also, sometimes all the posts available to comment on would be on the same topic, making writing the comments very repetitive. I think this class could be improved if the blogging requirements were slightly altered, but other than that I didn’t really have any problems.

Hi Lin$ay,
I agree with most of your post. I enjoyed the instructor she was awesome on being open and communicating with us when we had questions, concerns or were frustrated. I also wish more instructors were available and responded quickly like she does.
There were times when I wanted to post early but I also understand why the time requirements were there so no particular person would go way ahead of the class. This kept us together as a unit as much as possible. I did have some frustration with people waiting til the end of the week to complete their assignments which meant I could not respond to earn my 3 points until the weekend.
Thanks for sharing and have a great holiday.

Dear LIND$AY,

Yes I agree, being able to ask questions that were answered on email pretty fast, was great! I never used the instant messaging, but sounds like it worked out as well. I also did not like how we had to wait for people to write posts in order to comment on them. Getting the homework done early was never an option. If we could have had the choice to do all the discussions whenever we wanted, as long as they were legitimate, it would have been way better. I forgot to mention this on my post. Overall I liked the class.

Good poooossttt!!

Hi Lindsay,

I definitely agree with you about the office hours convenience, I have never had a teacher so available to me in my four years at SJSU. I have had some teacher who either have office hours during my other classes, or have office hours one day a week at 7:30am. Since most of us are online doing our class and other things, being available on this outlet really helped. I also had an issue with the comments although I forgot to mention it in my actual post. I felt for some of the posts I commented on, it ended up being the same topics so I didn't feel like I was able to engage in multiple conversations. Other than that, this class was fun! Have a great holiday!

Hi Lind$day,

I really enjoyed reading your post. I also agree with you about the convenience and availability of our Professor's office hours and being prompt with e-mails. I wish more Professors replied more promptly. I have had some professors mention that they only check their e-mails on weekdays or they only check them on the days they lecture, which is twice a week. I like the different ways of getting hold of our Professor. That way if for one student using instant messaging chat works better versus an e-mail for other students.

Since I have taken some online classes before this one, I am used to the twelve hour waiting period before having to do another post, so I don't mind the waiting twelve hours. However, when I was new to online classes, I also felt the same way that it was sometimes hard to wait twelve hours. However, I understand the point of why we have to wait. It is actually common with online classes where professors put a time restriction on having to wait to do our next post.

Great post overall!

Instant message hours should be a new requirement for all professors to disclose at the start of every class. Things are changing and the ability to be available for consult is growing. It was definitely helpful and I hope other teachers adopt this in the future. I see your issue with late bloggers, but really this is what is going to happen when people are given a choice; they procrastinate. Of course teachers could work around this by requiring an initial post by midweek, but personally I never had any issues with getting my posting done on time. Comments take like two seconds and have no time requirement. I did one once while waiting for my shower water to heat up.
